About Wetzel Estate
Wetzel Family of Wines was established in 1990 and traces a winemaking line back four generations to Germany. The estate sits atop Butler Hill, immediately off Highway 22 about twenty miles west of Salem, in the Van Duzer Corridor AVA, and the vineyard is LIVE certified.
The operation carries more than one label. Wetzel Estate is the estate-fruit line, drawn from around a hundred acres; Chateau Bianca and Opulent sit alongside it, with fruit gathered more widely across the Willamette Valley. All of them pour in the same room, which is why the tasting room is signed both ways.
That breadth is the point of a visit. Upwards of twenty wines are available at any time with the selection rotating monthly, running from still to sparkling, dry whites through to dessert and a spiced wine that regulars serve warm in winter. A flight menu is available on request. A 2011 Pinot Gris from the house was named by Wine Enthusiast among its top wines of the world.
It is an unfussy place: right off the highway, open every day, a tasting fee waived against a few bottles, and a barbecue on the patio in the warmer months. There is a bed and breakfast on the property, and the winery also runs a custom crush operation for other producers.
