About Wren Hop Vineyards
Wren Hop is a small, family-owned luxury winery in the Russian River Valley, with a storybook estate vineyard high on a Goldridge-soiled ridge above Windsor, overlooking both the Mayacamas and Sonoma mountain ranges. It's a father-and-son labor of love, James McDonough in Sonoma and his father in Chicago, who joke that where some families play Monopoly, theirs would rather debate rootstock and French barrel selection.
James was introduced to wine by his father and deepened the passion in San Francisco, where an ad agency he worked for counted Robert Mondavi Winery as a client; in 2008 he and his wife Jennifer bought the property, naming it for the resident wrens (in folklore, the small-but-mighty King of Birds). The organically farmed estate yields limited-production, single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Rose, made with careful clonal selection and detailed cluster sorting into wines of power and opulence.
Intentionally under the radar and highly allocated, Wren Hop offers private, by-appointment sit-down tastings at the estate, winery dog often in attendance.
