About Arkenstone Estate
Ron and Susan Krausz bought more than 40 acres on Howell Mountain's western slopes in 1988, then took the long way to a wine: vines went in primarily in 1998, the first commercial vintage arrived in 2006, and an underground winery followed in 2008. Thirteen organically farmed acres now sit at 1,400 to 1,600 feet, divided into 22 blocks by soil and variety.
Winemaker Sam Kaplan runs both cellar and vineyards in-house, turning out roughly 2,000 cases a year, about half estate-grown, half from hillside sources in eastern Napa Valley. Sauvignon Blanc is the signature white alongside Cabernet-based reds like the Estate Red and single-vineyard bottlings, all raised in a cave of some 25,000 square feet, part of which is rented to other small premium producers.
The Krauszes waited eighteen years between buying their Howell Mountain land and releasing a first commercial vintage.
