About Big Nose Winery
Big Nose Winery is a family-owned tasting room inside the historic Hotel Temecula on Main Street, one of Old Town's landmark buildings from the era when the Southern California railroad first reached the valley in the 1880s. Roger Mattar, who began making wine as a hobby in 2012 and completed a three-year enology program before founding the winery, runs it together with his wife Janice and son Matthew, and one of them is usually the person pouring your wine.
The lineup runs from whites and rose through Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and blends, with fruit sourced from strong California appellations including Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, Sonoma, Lodi and Temecula itself. Tastings come with generous pours and, more often than not, a walk through the history of both the building and the family.
Behind the historic hotel is the winery's quiet garden, a lush backyard with tables, a fire pit and heaters, set a block back from the Old Town bustle. It is family and pet friendly, walk-ins are welcome with no reservation needed, and weekends often add live music or a barbecue vendor at the edge of the lawn.
