About Buena Vista Winery
Buena Vista Winery is the most historically significant wine estate in California. Count Agoston Haraszthy — a Hungarian nobleman and entrepreneur who is widely credited as the father of California's commercial wine industry — founded Buena Vista in 1857, brought 100,000 European grape vine cuttings from Hungary to California, and established the practices and infrastructure that made California wine farming possible on a commercial scale.
The original stone Press House and aging caves that Haraszthy built in the 1860s still stand on the Old Winery Road property — a designated California Historical Landmark that combines genuine 19th-century winery architecture with the theatrical wine education experiences that current owner Jean-Charles Boisset has developed since acquiring the property. The Count's theatrical 'Ambassador of the Wines' tasting experience — featuring costumed wine educators who bring Haraszthy's story to life — has made Buena Vista one of the most entertaining and historically immersive wine destination experiences in California.
Beyond the history, the wine program is genuinely excellent: Carneros Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from estate and sourced vineyards consistently earn 90–95 point recognition, honoring both the Carneros AVA's cool-climate terroir and the European vine-cutting heritage that Haraszthy established 165 years ago on this same property.
