About Cain Vineyard & Winery
Cain Vineyard & Winery takes its name from founders Jerry and Joyce Cain, who built the estate high on Spring Mountain, on the ridge that separates Napa and Sonoma counties. The vineyard sits around 2,000 feet above the valley floor, a cool and remote perch that gives Cain its signature: Cabernet with more restraint than most of Napa, built on higher acidity and lower alcohol rather than sheer power and ripeness.
The estate made its name with Cain Five, a blend of all five red Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot) grown on the mountain. Cain Concept and the multi-vintage Cain Cuvee round out the range. Longtime winemaker Chris Howell has shaped the house style for more than three decades, an unabashed contrarian who favors terroir, minimal intervention, and old-school balance over Napa's flashier template. The wines lean earthy and savory, and can even carry a touch of brett character that sets them apart from their neighbors.
The 2020 Glass Fire destroyed the winery and hospitality center, and neither was rebuilt. In December 2025 the Cain brand and remaining inventory were acquired by Third Leaf Partners, a San Francisco firm that also owns Conn Creek and Cornerstone, while the Spring Mountain estate itself sold separately. Replanting of the vineyard is well underway, with full restoration targeted for 2030, and Howell continues to make the wine. There is no tasting at the estate today. Cain is now poured in Yountville at The Yount Room, a walk-in collective in the historic depot at 6505 Washington St, open daily.
