About Calstar Cellars
Calstar Cellars is the one-person artisan label of proprietor and winemaker Rick Davis, who has been making cool-climate wine in Sonoma County since 2001. Davis came to wine through graduate work in soil science and a first cellar job on the East Coast, then moved west and honed his craft at Flowers Winery under Greg LaFollette and as a consulting winemaker for a string of respected Sonoma Coast and Russian River producers, including Londer, Halleck and Alcina. Calstar grew out of those relationships as his own outlet.
Pinot Noir is the focus, with Davis making around half a dozen single-vineyard bottlings, alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, a rose, a still Pinot Meunier and a Zinfandel. Everything is genuinely small: most bottlings run under 200 cases, made in a food-friendly, site-driven style that treats winemaking as a partnership between grower and cellar.
There is no glossy tasting room here. Tastings happen at the working production facility, an unvarnished, behind-the-scenes look at a serious cool-climate operation, best arranged in advance.
