About Canard Vineyard
Canard Vineyard occupies a 25-acre property in Calistoga that was once the homestead of Reason P. Tucker, a Gold Rush-era figure known for helping rescue Donner Party survivors; the estate's 1859 residence still stands, and some of its Zinfandel vines were planted more than 140 years ago. Rich and Carolyn Czapleski bought the property in 1983 and began commercial production the following year, making Canard one of the two oldest continuously producing vineyards in Napa Valley.
The 22 planted acres are farmed dry, head-trained, and sustainably, yielding just one to two tons per acre from vines ranging from 75 to over 150 years old. Managing director Adam Fox and winemaker Brian Graham craft nine single-vineyard bottlings a year, led by old-vine Zinfandel alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, sold mainly through the estate's mailing list and limited distribution in about ten states.
