About Forman Vineyard
Forman Vineyard is an appointment for wine travelers who appreciate Napa history and a restrained, wine-first experience. Proprietor Ric Forman founded the winery in the early 1980s after a long winemaking career, with a goal of producing small quantities of classically styled Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The estate sits on a ridge at the base of Howell Mountain overlooking St. Helena, giving the visit both historical and geographic context. Current private visits last about 60 to 90 minutes and include a seated tasting and tour of the wine cave. The estate is open daily from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. by appointment at 1501 Big Rock Road. Reservations are arranged directly, so this is not a stop to leave to chance or add between two tightly timed bookings. The most rewarding conversation at Forman is about continuity. Ask how the estate's Cabernet style has evolved across decades and how Forman's traditional approach influences decisions in the cellar. Chardonnay is equally important to the winery's identity, making the visit a useful break from itineraries that treat Napa as a single-variety Cabernet region.
The cave tour adds a physical connection to that history, but the wine is the main event. Visitors seeking a large hospitality complex, food program or social tasting scene will find better fits elsewhere. Forman is stronger for collectors, longtime Napa drinkers and guests who enjoy hearing how one producer's philosophy can remain recognizable across many vintages. Because the estate sits above St. Helena, leave a little extra time for the final approach and do not schedule another appointment too close behind it. Confirm the tasting price and arrival instructions when you book. A thoughtful hour or two at Forman can add historical depth to a Napa trip without requiring elaborate programming.
