About Green & Red Vineyard
Green & Red Vineyard is named for the two dominant colors in the Chiles Valley landscape: the green of the native oaks and cover crops that Jay Heminway maintains between his vine rows, and the red of the iron-rich volcanic soils that characterize this remote Napa Valley sub-valley. The colors are real and visible — walk the property and you see them.
Jay Heminway established Green & Red in 1972 on the Chiles Pope Valley Road, making it one of the earliest wine estates in what is now the Chiles Valley AVA. The remote, narrow valley — east of the Napa Valley floor, cooler than the benchlands and significantly less developed — produces Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon of unusual freshness and mineral character. The volcanic iron-rich soils that color the landscape red contribute mineral complexity that flat alluvial soils cannot.
Wine Spectator has scored Green & Red's estate Zinfandel at 89–93 points across multiple vintages, recognizing the singular character of Chiles Valley Zinfandel from one of the AVA's founding estates.
