About Hatcher Winery
Two locations: Matt Hatcher runs two Calaveras tasting rooms. The downtown room is at 425 Main Street, Murphys (Mon-Thu 11am-4pm, Fri-Sun 11am-5pm), and the winery and garden tasting room sits just outside Murphys at 1969 Highway 4, Vallecito, which pours both Hatcher/School Street and Chatom wines in a Mediterranean garden setting (daily 11am-4pm). Both share (209) 736-6500; the estate vineyard is in Angels Camp.
Hatcher pours below Murphys' Main Street: Matt Hatcher's Calaveras label made its home in a basement-level cellar downtown, crafting small lots of Rhone varieties, Zinfandel and Bordeaux reds that earned a loyal following among the town's stroll-and-taste crowd.
The subterranean room and small-lot seriousness give it a speakeasy charm. Duck downstairs; it's worth it.
