About Ink Grade Estate
Ink Grade's Howell Mountain vines trace back to 1873, when pioneer Theron H. Ink received a land deed signed by President Ulysses S. Grant and planted the site's first grapevines. The Heitz family owned the ranch from 1989 until 2018, when it was acquired by Gaylon M. Lawrence Jr.; the property relaunched in 2020 as an independent estate under Lawrence Wine Estates, with Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr. and winemaker Matt Taylor at the helm.
The estate spans roughly 800 acres on Howell Mountain, with about 220 acres planted between 700 and 2,400 feet in elevation and farmed organically and biodynamically, it is the largest Demeter-certified Biodynamic ranch in Napa Valley. Winemaker Matt Taylor aims to preserve what he calls the site's 'wild purity and raw tension,' producing roughly 5,000 cases a year led by Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.
