About Joseph Swan Vineyards
Joseph Swan Vineyards is the most historically significant estate in the Russian River Valley — and one of the most important in California wine history. Joe Swan planted his Laguna Road estate in 1969, when almost no one in Sonoma County believed that Pinot Noir could be grown in the cool, fog-influenced Green Valley sub-AVA and long before the Russian River Valley had any reputation for producing world-class wine. He was, in the most literal sense, the pioneer.
Swan's 1970s Pinot Noirs — made before California wine had a critical establishment to impress — were revelatory documents of what the cool Russian River Valley could achieve. His estate Pinot Noir and old-vine Zinfandel from the original 1969 plantings predated the entire cool-climate California wine movement that Williams Selyem, Gary Farrell, and others would later build their reputations upon.
Today, Joe's son-in-law Rod Berglund continues the tradition at the same estate, producing estate Pinot Noir from the original plantings alongside old-vine Zinfandel and a small selection of other varieties. The weekend tasting room experience — in the original farmhouse setting surrounded by the historic vines — is one of the most genuinely agricultural and historically resonant winery visits available in the Russian River Valley.
