About K&M Wines
Ken Morrison and Mauro Hernandez are the K and the M. They were living in San Francisco and tasting seriously when they bought Alchemy Vineyard in 2006, taking it on from Fred and Jill Newton, who planted it in 1983 on the south slopes of Parrett Mountain in the Chehalem Mountains.
It is a small planting of a few acres. The Pinot Noir is Pommard and Wadenswil, older selections than the Dijon clones that dominate newer Oregon vineyards, and the Chardonnay is Dijon. The name Alchemy stands for change and transformation, and the vineyard is grazed by five miniature Babydoll and Southdown sheep, who between them handle most of the weeding, some of the sucker removal and all of the mowing.
Sean Davis has made the wine since 2015, having come in as assistant winemaker in 2009. He arrived at wine in 2007 from a background in fine arts and cooking, and makes his own label alongside this one. The house style leans on minimal handling, French oak with little new wood, and what new oak there is lightly toasted. The range runs to estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plus bigger reds sourced from eastern Oregon and Washington, and the pricing is unusually reasonable for the valley.
The tasting room is on Main Street in Carlton, which the winery fairly calls the most walkable wine town in Oregon. It runs as a speakeasy-style lounge with live music on Saturdays, a flight of five or six wines and light food, and a Milltown Mercantile section selling handcrafted goods from local artists. Club members are called Alchemists and get an annual dinner out in the vines.
