About Koehler Winery
Koehler sits on a hundred-acre estate on Foxen Canyon Road, with a small riparian stream running through it and sixty-seven acres under vine. The vineyard was expanded to that size more than forty years ago by a previous owner, one of the most successful television producers in the business, whose credits ran to The Love Boat, Dynasty and Wonder Woman.
The Koehler family bought the property in 1997, by which point its fruit was already documented among the best in the Santa Ynez Valley. When they realised how much good valley wine was being made from grapes they had grown, they started their own label and tasting room rather than keep selling it on.
The planting is unusually broad for the valley: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Syrah, Sangiovese, Grenache and Viognier across the sixty-seven acres.
The room itself is plain, and visitors say so cheerfully - a simple space on a simple field, shaded by oaks, with a resident cat and ostriches in a pen outside. It is open every day, which most of its Foxen Canyon neighbours are not, and picnic baskets are welcome.
