About Lonesome Rock
Danny and Susan Klieman spent four years living in France, where Danny studied oenology at the University of Bourgogne, and made a promise there to farm a vineyard of their own one day. Decades in Chicago followed, raising children and building a career in the wine trade, before they found this site in 2020 and started the winery in 2021. They describe it as the end of a twenty-five year search, which the Chicago area code on their phone still quietly confirms.
The site is the point. It sits at the extreme northwestern edge of the Willamette Valley, seven miles west of Carlton, high in the Coast Range where the mountains meet the valley floor. Fractured volcanic soils, steady coastal wind, and mountains rising to the north and west that shelter the fruit from early autumn rain. Sunny days and cold nights stretch the growing season out, so the grapes ripen slowly and hold their acidity, and yields come in naturally low.
Everything is estate grown, organically farmed and LIVE certified, and the range is only Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the single vineyard.
Visits are hosted by the Kliemans themselves at a tasting house above the vineyard, surrounded by forest with the Coast Range in view. Sessions run daily at eleven, one and three by appointment, covering five wines including library bottlings when they are open. The winery is candid that these are working conversations about farming, vintage calls and the realities of building a small estate, rather than a scripted pour.
