About MacMurray Estate Vineyards

Only three families have ever owned MacMurray Ranch. Colonel Hugh Porter, a California pioneer who fought in the Bear Flag Revolt, established the farmstead along the Russian River in the 1840s, and the Porters farmed it for three generations. In 1941 actor Fred MacMurray, an avid fly fisherman who had fallen for the property on fishing trips with the Porters, bought the ranch as a retreat from Hollywood. The star of Double Indemnity and My Three Sons embraced the rancher's life in earnest, raising prize-winning cattle, growing prunes, apples and alfalfa, supplying surplus produce to the Army during wartime, and entertaining film friends at the historic ranch houses he lovingly restored. The ranch remained his constant through a five-decade career, and he worked it until his death in 1991.

The Gallo family purchased the 1,500-acre property in 1996 and transformed it into one of the Russian River Valley's most acclaimed Pinot Noir vineyards, while faithfully restoring the original buildings and preserving the old-growth oaks and redwoods. Fred's daughter Kate MacMurray, an actress, screenwriter and environmental activist, remains the brand's ambassador and the living link to the ranch's story, crediting her father's soil-first diversified farming with the health of the land the vines now grow in. Today MacMurray Estate Vineyards spans estate sites across the Russian River Valley and the Central Coast, producing cool-climate Pinot Noir alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, with vineyard blocks harvested and fermented individually to capture each site's character.

A Hollywood legend's beloved 1941 ranch, farmed since the 1840s and reborn under the Gallo family as one of the Russian River Valley's great Pinot Noir estates.
