Mount Eden Vineyards is named for the mountain — Mount Eden, the summit above Saratoga in the Santa Cruz Mountains whose name carries the paradise etymology. The estate was founded in 1972 on land that Martin Ray had farmed beginning in the 1940s, inheriting both the physical vineyard and the legendary difficult-terrain ethos that Ray cultivated.
The summit estate produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon from estate vineyard blocks at high elevation where the granitic soils, extreme diurnal temperature swings, and Pacific fog access create one of California's most distinctive wine-growing environments. Wine Advocate has scored Mount Eden's Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at 91–95 points.
