About Calera Wine Company
Calera Wine Company is named for the Spanish calera — the lime kiln, the industrial furnace used to process limestone. Josh Jensen discovered the high-calcium limestone soils of Mount Harlan while searching for Burgundian terroir in California, and the old lime kilns on the property (used to process the same limestone that makes the soil so distinctive) gave the estate its name. Jensen's conviction that Pinot Noir needed the specific soil chemistry of Burgundian limestone led him to purchase the Mount Harlan property in 1975, founding one of California's most historically significant Pinot Noir estates. Wine Advocate has scored Calera's single-vineyard Pinot Noir at 90–96 points.
