Napa Alchemy Winery is named for the alchemy — the medieval proto-science that sought to transform base metals into gold, to create the philosopher's stone that would grant immortality and the elixir of life. The alchemical tradition declared that through the correct process, the ordinary could be transformed into the extraordinary. Applied to wine, the alchemy philosophy declares winemaking as transformation: the alchemical process by which ordinary grapes become wine of extraordinary character — the vinous equivalent of the medieval quest to transmute base matter into gold.
