We can document 118 American wineries working old, ancient or own-rooted vines. Some of those plantings predate Prohibition, and a few predate the state they stand in.
A vine past fifty years old produces less fruit and more concentration. Yields drop, clusters shrink, and the roots run deep enough that drought and heat move the wine less than they move its younger neighbours. Growers keep these blocks because the wine is distinct, not because the economics are kind.
They are also irreplaceable in the literal sense. A century-old vine cannot be planted, only inherited, which is why old-vine blocks disappear quietly whenever land values beat farming returns.
Lodi is the heart of it. The region's sandy soils kept phylloxera at bay, which is why own-rooted Zinfandel planted before 1920 still crops there. Jessie's Grove Winery, Klinker Brick Winery, Harney Lane Winery, Oak Farm Vineyards all work heritage blocks, and Lodi's low tasting fees mean the oldest vines in California are also among the cheapest to taste.
Elsewhere, Cline Family Cellars - Contra Costa Roots farms century-old Contra Costa plantings, and Sonoma County holds the largest documented concentration of old-vine sites in our catalog. In Sonoma, Bedrock Wine Co pours on the Sonoma Plaza from a historic vineyard first planted in the 1880s, and Louis M. Martini has farmed Monte Rosso on Moon Mountain since 1936, a site with Semillon planted in 1886, Zinfandel from the 1890s and a 1940 Cabernet block, and on the Central Coast Saucelito Canyon Vineyard still crops three acres of head-trained Zinfandel planted around 1880 in the Arroyo Grande Valley, restored by Bill Greenough beginning in 1974 after the block sat abandoned from Prohibition.
Ask the age of the block and whether the vines are own-rooted. Then taste the winery's young-vine bottling of the same variety alongside it if they have one. The difference is usually obvious and is the fastest wine education available for the price of a flight.
Browse the regions in the winery finder, or read why Lodi costs a fraction of Napa.
These are wineries whose pages specifically reference old, ancient, century-old or own-rooted vines from sources we verified. Many more work old blocks without saying so, so treat 118 as a floor. Vine age claims come from the wineries themselves.
