About Rangeland Wines

Rangeland is the second act of Laird Foshay, a Nova Scotia-born Silicon Valley entrepreneur who published Dr. Dobb's and founded Investools before trading startups for saddle leather in 2000, buying the 1,500-acre Adelaida Springs Ranch in oak country near the historic Klau and Buena Vista mines, a frontier commercial hub as early as 1870. He and his wife Lisa planted the vineyard in 2002 at 1,700 feet, twelve miles from the ocean, and ran the place as a true diversified ranch: dry-farmed vines, grass-fed Angus cattle, sheep, bees and a stake in the local USDA meat plant behind their J&R Natural Meats venture.

The wines, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and estate blends the Foshays call field crafted, poured from a 2019 tasting room amid heritage oaks and a hundred-year-old barn at Vineyard Drive and Peachy Canyon Road. Honesty requires a present-tense note: with retirement approaching, the Foshays have wound down parts of the enterprise, closing the beef club in 2025 and bottling their 2022 Cabernet, just 190 cases, as a self-described swan song for the label, while conserving the ranch itself for future generations. Visitors should check current status before planning a trip; the land, at least, is protected.

A Silicon Valley publisher's 1,500-acre frontier ranch of dry-farmed vines and Angus cattle, now easing toward a conserved-land retirement.
