About Grand River Valley Wine

The Grand River Valley AVA is Ohio's quality wine heartland, stretching along the Lake Erie shore east of Cleveland in Ashtabula, Lake, and Geauga Counties. The region benefits from Lake Erie's thermal mass, which moderates winter cold and extends the growing season by several weeks compared to inland areas. The soils are glacially deposited clay and loam over shale, with excellent drainage on the gentle slopes above the river valley. Riesling is the signature grape, producing wines with bright acidity and stone-fruit character. Debonne Vineyards, the largest estate winery in Ohio, anchors the region, while smaller producers like Laurello Vineyards and Grand River Cellars produce increasingly ambitious Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. The covered bridge wine trail connecting several wineries through scenic countryside has become one of Ohio's most popular agritourism experiences.
