Lake Michigan Shore

The Lake Michigan Shore AVA occupies the southwestern corner of Michigan, a stretch of Berrien and Van Buren counties long known as the state's fruit belt. For more than a century, orchards and vineyards have thrived here for one reason: Lake Michigan. The lake stores summer heat and releases it slowly through fall, extending the growing season, while cold air drainage and lake breezes protect tender buds from late spring frost.

The soils are sandy and gravelly glacial deposits that drain freely and warm early, encouraging steady ripening. Sitting near the 42nd parallel, roughly the latitude of the northern Rhone, the region has the raw ingredients for aromatic whites and cool-climate reds. Riesling and Chardonnay lead the whites, while Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and cold-hardy hybrids anchor the reds, and sparkling wine is a growing specialty.

Anchored by historic producers like St. Julian in Paw Paw alongside estates around Baroda, Buchanan, and Berrien Springs, the region has become one of the Midwest's most accessible wine destinations. It is barely ninety minutes from Chicago, which has turned the lakeshore towns into a popular weekend escape combining tasting rooms, beaches, and farm stands.
