How Texas Wine Breaks Down
Texas wine tourism and Texas grape growing do not always happen in the same place. Many Hill Country wineries source fruit from the elevated Texas High Plains, while urban tasting rooms bring regional wines close to Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Lubbock.
For trip planning, WinoNotion uses five broad visitor regions. Within those guides we identify the state's eight official American Viticultural Areas: Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country, Bell Mountain, Texas High Plains, Texoma, Texas Davis Mountains, Escondido Valley, and Mesilla Valley.
Texas Visitor Regions
Texas Hill Country
Texas's best-known wine tourism region, pairing limestone hills, German-rooted towns, destination tasting rooms, and Mediterranean grape varieties.
Explore Hill Country →Texas High Plains
The agricultural engine of Texas wine, where high elevation, dry air, broad temperature swings, and deep farming knowledge support much of the state's grape supply.
Explore High Plains →North Texas & Texoma
An accessible urban-and-country wine region shaped by tasting rooms, estate vineyards, wine festivals, and the viticultural legacy of T.V. Munson.
Explore North Texas →West Texas
Texas wine at its most dramatic: desert edges, high mountain vineyards, historic cellars, and long drives that reward travelers with a strong sense of place.
Explore West Texas →East Texas, Gulf Coast & Brazos Valley
A broad, developing visitor region where wineries work with heat- and humidity-tolerant grapes and place tasting experiences close to major Texas population centers.
