About Scar of the Sea
Scar of the Sea is the coastal wine project of Mikey and Gina Giugni, founded in 2012 and shaped from the start by the Pacific: the fog, the wind and the marine soils of the Central Coast. The wines draw on old-vine Santa Maria Valley sites like Bien Nacido and Ontiveros alongside the SLO Coast, and in July 2024 the couple purchased their forever farm, the 29-acre Bassi Vineyard in Avila Beach, one mile from the ocean, bringing their regeneratively and biodynamically farmed holdings to 42 acres.
Everything is made naturally at their San Luis Obispo winery: native yeast, no adjustments, bottled unfiltered, with a solera system quietly evolving for the whites. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay lead, joined by methode ancestrale sparkling wines and true-to-their-roots apple ciders, and Gina's own acclaimed label, Lady of the Sunshine, is made under the same roof.
For Santa Barbara County travelers, Scar of the Sea is a discovery producer rather than an estate tasting destination in the county itself; check the winery's current tasting arrangements in San Luis Obispo before planning a visit.
