Best Seneca Lake Wineries (2026)

The heart of Finger Lakes wine country: world-class dry Riesling on the deepest, largest Finger Lake. Updated for 2026.

Seneca Lake is the heart of Finger Lakes wine country and, for many, the single best place to taste in the eastern United States. The deepest and largest-by-volume of New York's Finger Lakes, at roughly 618 feet deep and 38 miles long, it holds more wineries than any other lake in the region, strung along both shores between Geneva at the north end and Watkins Glen at the south. Its secret is water: the huge, deep lake rarely freezes and moderates the climate of the surrounding slopes, extending the growing season and protecting the vines, with the warmer lower-east-side 'banana belt' ripening even red grapes like Cabernet Franc and Blaufrankisch. Above all, Seneca Lake is a world-class home for Riesling, especially the crisp, dry, mineral style that has earned the Finger Lakes international acclaim, alongside excellent aromatic whites, sparkling wine, and cool-climate reds.

Below are the Seneca Lake wineries we recommend most, from the Riesling benchmark to acclaimed dry-Riesling specialists and hospitable lakeside estates. For the neighboring lake, see our Cayuga Lake Wine Trail guide. Current as of November 2026.

How to choose

Planning your visit

Seneca Lake sits in the center of the Finger Lakes, about an hour southeast of Rochester and roughly four to four and a half hours from New York City. Wineries line both shores along Routes 14 (west) and 414 (east), with the towns of Geneva at the north end and Watkins Glen at the south as natural bases, and the lower-east-side 'banana belt' holding a dense run of acclaimed estates. Pick one shore per day so you are not circling the 38-mile lake; three or four wineries is a comfortable pace. Visit late spring through fall, summer and harvest are glorious, and a great approach is to ask each estate for its dry-to-sweet Riesling lineup to taste the grape's full range. Some smaller, sought-after estates (like Forge) are by appointment, so check ahead.

What to avoid

Do not try to loop the whole lake in a day; it is large, so pick the east or west shore and savor it. Do not assume Finger Lakes Riesling is sweet, the signature style here is crisp and bone-dry, though most estates pour sweeter versions too, so ask. And do not overlook the reds; the banana belt makes genuinely good cool-climate Cabernet Franc alongside the famous whites.
