About Smith Devereux
Ian Devereux White spent years as a travel and wine writer, crisscrossing the country in an RV and visiting over 1,800 wineries for outlets including Wine Enthusiast and Lonely Planet, until an interview subject turned the question back on him: would he ever want to make his own wine? He shared an office with John Anthony Truchard, whose family had farmed Carneros grapes since 1974, and the two teamed up with music industry veteran Steve Smith, sealing the partnership with a handshake backstage at the Greek Theater in Berkeley.
The trio originally launched as J.W. Thomas before renaming to Smith Devereux, combining Steve's surname with Ian's French middle name, after customers kept asking who "JW" and "Thomas" were. The winery, whose first vintage came in 2012, sources its flagship single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from a small two-acre Oak Knoll District plot, and Ian still personally hosts vineyard tours while also playing in a band and coaching boxing on the side.
