Snowden Vineyards

Wayne and Virginia Snowden bought a 160-acre ridge-top ranch in the eastern foothills between Rutherford and Conn Valley in 1955, land first planted to grapes in 1878 during the Homestead Act era. In 1962 the Snowdens planted Cabernet Sauvignon using cuttings from Nathan Fay's vineyard, in what would later become the Stags Leap District, carrying water up the hillside by hand in garbage cans tied into the back seat of a 1952 Oldsmobile to keep the young vines alive.

Sons Scott and Randy took over the ranch after their father's 1977 death, and for years sold their entire crop to Stag's Leap Wine Cellars before the family began keeping grapes for its own wines starting with a 383-case debut vintage in 1993. Scott's daughter, Diana Snowden Seysses, has served as winemaker since 2005, continuing three generations of family stewardship over the same hillside land.
