Smith Devereux Winery is a Napa Valley wine producer, established in 2008. Ian Devereux White, John Anthony Truchard, and Steve Smith's Napa Valley label, born from a handshake backstage at Berkeley's Greek Theater. A travel writer who became a vintner, founder Ian Devereux White visited over 1,800 wineries as a travel and wine journalist before an interview subject convinced him to make his own wine instead.
Sealed with a handshake at a concert, the three founders agreed to start the winery backstage at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, weeks after first meeting. Renamed after customer confusion, the winery originally launched as J.W. Thomas before switching to Smith Devereux, blending Steve Smith's surname with Ian's middle name, Devereux, of French heritage.
