About Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery
Spottswoode's 1882 Victorian home, built by German immigrant George Schonewald as a summer retreat, gave the estate its name decades later when owner Mrs. Albert Spotts renamed the property in memory of her late husband. Mary and Jack Novak, who had no prior wine experience, bought the estate in 1972 and released their first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, encouraged in part by neighboring vintner John Shafer.
Spottswoode became the first Napa Valley vineyard farmed organically in 1985 and earned CCOF certification in 1992, well ahead of most of the valley. Mary Novak ran the estate until her death in 2016, and her daughters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak continue to lead it today, alongside past winemakers including Tony Soter and Rosemary Cakebread.
Spottswoode's 2023 Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon earned a favorable review from Vinography in July 2026, with a recommendation to cellar it three to five years.
