About Stacked Stone Cellars
Stacked Stone Cellars is closed. It was a family-owned, sustainably farmed winery at 1525 Peachy Canyon Rd on the west side of Paso Robles, California, a few minutes from downtown, and its owner and winemaker was Donald Thiessen, a Paso Robles transplant of some thirty-five years who was known around town for his cowboy manner and his humour and who poured for guests himself on weekends. The property is now occupied by Caliza Winery, which moved its operation there over Labor Day weekend 2024. The stackedstone.com domain has since been listed for sale and directory listings carry the business as closed.
The wines were small-batch and red-leaning: Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and a Cabernet Sauvignon blend, all decorated with competition medals. The visit was as informal as the winemaker. Guests spread out at picnic tables under mature oaks on the hillside above Peachy Canyon Road, and the place welcomed dogs and children rather than tolerating them, which made it a common stop for groups who wanted somewhere unfussy between the more polished westside estates.
The address is no longer Stacked Stone. Caliza Winery now runs a tasting room at 1525 Peachy Canyon Rd, so the drive up the canyon still ends at a working winery, just a different one with its own hours, fees and booking rules. Peachy Canyon Road itself remains one of the better short loops off Highway 46 West for tasting rooms. Confirm current details, including hours and reservation policy, directly with whichever winery you plan to visit.
