About Sutter Home Winery
Sutter Home Winery carries one of California's most historically layered wine names — Sutter (evoking John Sutter, whose 1848 sawmill discovery ignited the California Gold Rush) combined with Home (the domestic warmth of the farmstead, the house where the family lives), placed on a property that Swiss immigrant John Thomann purchased in 1874, making Sutter Home one of California's oldest continuously operating wineries.
In the 1970s, winemaker Bob Trinchero pioneered White Zinfandel from Amador County grapes — accidentally creating an off-dry rosé style that became America's most popular wine through the 1980s and 1990s. The White Zinfandel phenomenon introduced millions of American consumers to wine and fundamentally changed the California wine industry.
The Saint Helena Highway estate offers free tasting — one of Napa Valley's most accessible everyday wine experiences — alongside the Victorian farmhouse and picnic grounds.
