Switchback Ridge

Eliza and Mads Peterson, immigrants from Ireland and Denmark, bought this 100-acre property at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon between St. Helena and Calistoga in 1914. When Prohibition hit in 1920, the family's small Zinfandel vineyard gave way to a plum orchard that fed their nine children, and it was the Peterson daughters, not the sons, who inherited and ran the ranch over the generations that followed.

Fourth-generation family member Kelly Peterson-Holmes launched Switchback Ridge in 1999, naming it for the hillside trails her father John explored as a child, and leases the vineyard from him. The estate still farms a two-acre block of dry-farmed Petite Sirah planted in the 1950s that Kelly's great-aunt Carrie, known as "Auntie," insisted never be replanted, telling the family not to touch her "Pets."
