About Vega Vineyard & Farm

Vega Vineyard and Farm revives one of Santa Barbara County's oldest wine properties: Rancho La Vega, established in 1853, whose original adobe home still stands on the 212-acre ranch just off Highway 101 near Buellton. For decades the site was Mosby Winery, whose 21 acres of Italian varietals remain the estate's backbone; in 2022 local hospitality veterans Karen and Jimmy Loizides purchased the property, restored the ranch's historic name and reopened it as a working winery, farm and gathering place.

Winemaking is led by Steve Clifton, one of the county's most decorated hands with Italian varieties through his Palmina and Brewer-Clifton years, with Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Dolcetto, Barbera, Vermentino and Albarino sharing the list with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Tastings pour in a barn that began life as the ranch's 1880s carriage house, next to a shaded garden patio with vineyard views.

The farm half of the name is literal: a Mediterranean-leaning menu built on estate-grown produce, a paddock of llamas, goats, sheep and pigs that kids can visit and feed, and regular live music make Vega one of the valley's most family-friendly wine stops. Check the site for current hours and reservations.

An 1853 rancho reborn: Steve Clifton's Italian-variety wines, farm-to-table food and friendly farm animals near Buellton.
