About Viader Vineyards & Winery
Delia Viader, an Argentine-born single mother of four with a doctorate in philosophy from the Sorbonne, borrowed money from her father to buy raw Howell Mountain land in 1986 at just 26 years old. She planted vines vertically up the mountainside's steep 32% slope, a European technique almost unheard of in California, and released her first vintage in 1989, a Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon blend so distinctive it earned the nickname "Liquid Cashmere."
A 2005 arson fire at a Vallejo wine storage warehouse destroyed Viader's entire 2003 vintage, forcing Delia to abandon a side project in Italy's Bolgheri region and pivot the winery toward direct-to-consumer sales. Son Alan Viader, who worked the vineyard from age nine, became lead winemaker in 2006; the estate and property became part of Crystal Springs in October 2024.
