About Vineyard 29

Vineyard 29 began in 1989 with a three-acre planting in St. Helena, overseen by noted vineyard manager David Abreu using cuttings from neighboring Grace Family Vineyards, and released its first vintage under owners Teresa Norton and Tom Paine in 1992. Silicon Valley technology entrepreneur Chuck McMinn, who co-founded Covad Communications, bought the brand and its seven acres in 2000 after discovering it at a Napa Valley wine auction, and built a state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery designed by St. Helena architect Jon Lail.

McMinn hired consulting winemaker Philippe Melka to craft the wines and expanded the estate with the historic Aida Vineyard, adding a second label of the same name. Melka's associate, Keith Emerson, joined in 2005 and took over as winemaker in 2017, later becoming president and CEO when McMinn retired in 2022, continuing to run the winery for the McMinn family with vineyards now including the Railroad and Winner estates.

A tech entrepreneur's pivot,Chuck McMinn, who co-founded broadband pioneer Covad Communications, discovered Vineyard 29 at a Napa Valley wine auction and bought the brand in 2000.
Planted with cuttings from a famous neighbor, the original three-acre vineyard was planted in 1989 using budwood from neighboring Grace Family Vineyards, one of Napa's earliest cult Cabernets.
A high-tech winery for its era,the gravity-flow facility McMinn built included an integrated data network controlling lighting, irrigation, and fermentation, along with a cogeneration plant that took it off the local power grid.
