VHR Vine Hill Ranch

Grape growers have farmed this Oakville property since 1884, when families including the Hoppers and Whittons documented their annual plantings in hand-scribed reports. Architect Bruce Kelham bought the land in the late 1950s after selling his Marin County ranch to help create Point Reyes National Seashore, and his daughter Alexandra and her husband Bob Phillips moved onto the property in 1978 to raise their family and grow grapes.

For decades Vine Hill Ranch sold its fruit exclusively to other producers, including Beaulieu Vineyard's André Tchelistcheff from 1957 to 1974 and later Robert Mondavi, Duckhorn, Araujo, and Bill Harlan's BOND project; its grapes helped make the historic 1968 BV Georges de Latour and the 1997 Robert Mondavi Reserve. The Phillips family, now run by Bob and Alex's son Bruce and his wife Heather, didn't release its own VHR-labeled Cabernet Sauvignon until 2008, made by winemaker Françoise Peschon, a former Château Haut-Brion apprentice.
