About Vine Cliff Winery

George Burrage and Thomas Tucker bought this Oakville land from George Yount's estate in 1870 and built Vine Cliff Winery the following year, quickly growing it into one of Napa Valley's largest wineries with tunnels dug by Chinese laborers. Phylloxera destroyed the vineyards by 1900, and after owner John Fry's death in 1901, the winery building crumbled into one of Napa Valley's classic "ghost wineries," leaving only its stone foundation and original cave.

Nell Sweeney bought the abandoned property in 1985 and replanted Cabernet Sauvignon, eventually expanding to 100 estate acres and drilling a 15,000-square-foot cave near the historic 1871 tunnels. The Sweeney family sold the estate in 2023 to Canadian businessman Stephan Crétier and Stephany Maillery, who continue to work alongside longtime family winemaker Rob Sweeney.
