Delia Viader —Delia Viader — an Argentine-born single mother with a PhD from the Sorbonne and no prior viticulture experience — purchased the steep Howell Mountain hillside property in 1989 and proceeded to clear and terrace the impossibly angled volcanic slope herself, laying out hillside vineyard rows that no conventional farming equipment could access and that required hand-harvesting because the slope was too steep for mechanical vineyard management.
