Launny Steffens, who spent 38 years at Merrill Lynch including as vice chairman before founding his own investment firm, and his wife Weezie bought a 40-acre Spring Mountain property in 1999 after a patient search for the right Napa Valley site. Both had traveled extensively in Asia and developed a fascination with numerology, and named the winery for the numbers seven and eight, which symbolize luck in Western culture and prosperity in Eastern culture respectively.

The Steffens spent from 2004 through 2008 building the winery, which includes an 8,000-square-foot crescent-shaped cave nearly at the top of the Spring Mountain ridge, over 2,000 feet above the valley floor. Their son Wesley, who trained under Thomas Keller at The French Laundry and worked as a cellar hand at Harlan Estate, now serves as estate director and assistant winemaker, alongside winemaker Martha McClellan, whose resume includes Blankiet Estate and Sloan.
