Volker Eisele Family Estate

Volker Eisele, a German immigrant working on a sociology PhD at Berkeley, and his wife Liesel discovered an abandoned 19th-century winery in Chiles Valley in 1974 while visiting her mother's weekend house nearby. The property, once Francis Sievers's Lomitas Vineyard and Winery, dated to the 1870s and still held its original gravity-flow wooden winery building, largely spared from the phylloxera epidemic that devastated Napa Valley in the 1890s.

The Eiseles replanted the vineyard to its original 19th-century footprint using Bordeaux varieties, farming organically from the start, decades before organic certification became common in Napa Valley. Volker Eisele successfully petitioned for the Chiles Valley AVA's federal recognition in 1999, and the estate remains entirely family-run today under son Alexander and his wife Catherine.
