About Arbe Garbe
Arbe Garbe is a cult, micro-production label built around an unusual idea for California: the aromatic white wines of Friuli, in northeast Italy. Founders Enrico Maria Bertoz and Letizia Pauletto grew up in that region, moved to the United States in 1994, and spent years in prestigious cellars, with Enrico working at Sine Qua Non and later serving as head winemaker at Flora Springs, before launching their own label in 2007. The name comes from the Friulian term for the bad weeds, or cover crops, that grow between the vines back home.
The wines are the point. Arbe Garbe specializes in Friulian varietals grown in Sonoma's Russian River Valley, including Malvasia Bianca, Tocai Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, most famously its signature white blend: an intensely aromatic, textural wine that helped set the California benchmark for the style. Production is tiny, sourced from a handful of specific vineyards, some grafted to these grapes just for Enrico.
Because output is so small and sold largely direct, Arbe Garbe is a name known more to sommeliers and collectors than to casual tasting-room visitors. Tastings are limited and best arranged directly with the winery. Anyone curious about serious, Italian-inflected California whites will find few purer expressions of the style.
