About Ballentine Vineyards
The Ballentine family has farmed in St. Helena since 1905, when they purchased what is now Pocai Vineyard in the Calistoga AVA for $10 in gold coins; the winery building itself was formerly L. Pocai and Sons Winery. The family is now in its fourth generation of ownership, farming sustainably with rainwater collection, solar power, and water-recycling systems at the St. Helena facility.
Ballentine farms three estate vineyards totaling about 75 acres: Betty's Vineyard around the winery (mostly Chenin Blanc and Malvasia Bianca), Fig Tree Vineyard purchased in 1949 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc on rocky, loamy soil), and the historic Pocai Vineyard in Calistoga (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel on rocky Bale gravelly loam).
