About Battuello Vineyards
Matteo Battuello came through Ellis Island in 1906 and by 1909 had established the family farm in St. Helena; his wife Serafina joined him from Northern Italy in 1912. The original plantings read like a time capsule, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Mondeuse, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, and Napa Gamay, the grape the family now bottles as Valdiguié.
Today the estate covers 82 acres off Ehlers Lane, run by Craig Battuello and his son Dave, the third and fourth generations. Long a farming family first, the Battuellos now bottle their own label: Sauvignon Blanc, a Valdiguié rosé called Alessa, varietal Valdiguié, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a top Cabernet dubbed Stalla. Visits are private, seasonal, and hosted by the family itself.
The Battuellos have farmed the same St. Helena ground since 1909, and still bottle Valdiguié, the grape their ancestors knew as Napa Gamay.
