About Barnett Vineyards
Hal and Fiona Barnett bought a 40-acre property on Spring Mountain in 1983 looking for a weekend escape from San Francisco fog, not a winery. They began planting vineyards in 1984, and when they couldn't find buyers for their grapes in 1989, they made their first vintage themselves with winemaker Kent Rasmussen, just 232 cases of estate Cabernet Sauvignon.
The estate's roughly 14 planted acres sit on steep, rocky 35-40 degree hillside terrain at about 2,000 feet elevation, requiring extensive terracing. David Tate, who previously worked at Ridge Vineyards and in Australia's Barossa Valley and France's Provence region, has been winemaker and general manager since 2007, continuing a house style built on minimal intervention and French oak aging.
