About Beltane Ranch

Beltane Ranch's story begins with two remarkable 19th-century figures: pioneer viticulturist John Drummond, whose fine-wine legacy the estate still honors, and Mary Ellen Pleasant, the extraordinary Black abolitionist and businesswoman born to enslaved parents who worked with John Brown, guided on the Underground Railroad, and built a fortune through shrewd San Francisco investments. Pleasant and banker Thomas Bell bought the former Drummond Ranch in 1892, christening it Beltane and building its New Orleans-influenced Victorian ranch house.

Today the 105-acre agricultural preserve at the base of the Mayacamas is a six-generation family operation with a proudly matriarchal streak, from Effia Heins's 1936 purchase through matriarchs Rosemary Wood, Alexa Wood, and now Lauren Benward Krause; in 2004 the family sold 1,300 acres to Sonoma County's Open Space District for permanent conservation. The regeneratively farmed estate produces small-batch wines, including a Sauvignon Blanc that earned Wine Spectator acclaim, alongside a historic farm-stay inn shaded by ancient oaks.

Founded by a legendary abolitionist,Mary Ellen Pleasant, born to enslaved parents, worked the Underground Railroad and built a San Francisco fortune before purchasing this ranch in 1892.
Six generations of forceful women, from Pleasant through today's Lauren Benward Krause, Beltane has been led by women, including through the night the family fought the 2017 Nuns Canyon fire to save it.
1,300 acres given to conservation,in 2004 the family sold most of the ranch to Sonoma County's Open Space District, preserving the land forever while keeping the historic heart as a working farm.
