About Benessere Vineyards
John and Ellen Benish, transplants from Chicago who fell in love with wine on a trip to Italy, purchased the St. Helena property in 1995 and released their first vintage that year, just 135 cases of Sangiovese. John Benish passed away in October 2018, and the winery continues under the Benish family, focused on Italian varietals rarely grown elsewhere in Napa Valley.
The 43-acre estate, a former thoroughbred horse ranch along the Napa River, has 36 planted acres and also draws on the neighboring Collins Holystone Vineyard, home to Zinfandel vines planted in 1923. Benessere grows Sangiovese, Nero d'Avola, Montepulciano, Aglianico and Sagrantino, the last two grown nowhere else in Napa Valley, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, producing about 3,500 cases a year under Fish Friendly Farming and Napa Green certification.
