About Bella Union Winery
Bella Union was established in 2012 with a first vintage of estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and is now owned by Far Niente Wine Estates, which acquired the Rutherford property in late 2021. The site previously housed Provenance Winery and, before that, Beaucanon Winery. Its name honors the nearby Bella Union cinnabar mine in the Mayacamas Mountains, which operated from the late 1860s through 1931.
The estate spans about 300 planted acres across Napa Valley, with a 120-acre home vineyard in Rutherford (60 acres to Cabernet Sauvignon) and the 133-acre Grand Sky Vineyard in Carneros, formerly part of Clos du Val. Following a $20 million renovation, Bella Union reopened to the public in September 2024 with new tasting experiences and an artist-in-residence program.
Within the Far Niente family, Bella Union plays the experimental modern sister: the tasting spaces mix velvet seating and golden accents with panoramic vineyard views from the glass-walled Jewel Box room, and the winemaking leans into playful blends beyond the classic Napa Cabernet mold - elevated but deliberately unstuffy.
