Bloomer Creek Vineyard

Bloomer Creek Vineyard is one of the Finger Lakes' most quietly acclaimed producers, the life's work of Kim Engle and his wife, the artist Debra Bermingham. Kim's love affair with vines began in 1978 while pruning grapes above Cayuga Lake as a Cornell student; the couple began buying land and planting in the early 1980s and formally established the estate in 1999 from ten acres on the west side of Cayuga Lake, later adding the Barrow Vineyard on Seneca Lake near Hector in 2012.

Long before natural wine was fashionable, the 'Bloomers' carved their own path: organic farming with no herbicides or irrigation, hand-harvesting, native-yeast fermentations, whole-cluster work, and extended lees aging with fermentations left to run at their own pace. The results, expressive Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, and Chenin Blanc, have drawn praise from critics like Jancis Robinson and a wine dinner at New York's James Beard House.

After more than two decades, the founders have decided to sell the Seneca Lake tasting room and production cellar in Hector and return to their original Cayuga Lake home in Ovid, and public tastings are currently paused.
